Child Welfare Services Technology INTRODUCTION Reform of child welfare services and their accessibility is an area of much needed improvement. Some of the many aspects of care that can be improved with advanced technological resources are referrals, intake, coverage, and placement. Case management, delivery of services, finance, organizational forms, education, and outcomes are also areas for enhancement. Due to a lack of consistency within states and state to state programs along with budget cuts the child welfare system is not maximizing technology to provide services consistently or efficiently. Public and private child welfare administrators alike recognized that their systems had not yet fully developed the basic†¦show more content†¦Additionally, computers have greatly decreased the time required for case notes and coordination of services but overall they are greatly underutilized in serving children and families. Computers track and report the distribution of federal and state funds but have no way to determine t he effectiveness of those funds. All of these data collection tools fall short because the data requires analysis in order to be relevant for the improvement of care. We may track how many days an average foster child stays in their first placement but how does that information apply to acting in the best interest of the child. TRENDS While the data collected is important for policy changes and identifying best practices for agency staff, the trend is to find ways for this information to be used in real-time to provide services, reduce risk, increase the child’s quality of life in the system, and minimize the amount of time the child stays in foster care. Another technology trend in the field of child welfare services is the use of online classes and training for parents, caregivers, and foster parents. Utilizing web and DVD training, offers convenience and flexibility through home-based training and is more cost effective than live training (Pacifici, Delaney, White, Cummings, Nelson, 2005).
